Boys hoops wrap: West Iron scores first victory

HANCOCK — Matthew Dutcher rang up 19 points, while Brayden Marcell and Elijah Oberlin added 11 points each to lead the West Iron County boys varsity basketball team to its first win of the season, a 55-52 decision over West Pac Conference foe Hancock on Tuesday night.

West Iron easily outdistanced its previous high output of 34. In fact, the Wykons (1-9) scored more points in the opening quarter (21) then they have in four games this year.

The Bulldogs (1-10) came back to grab a 44-43 lead after three quarters, but West Iron pulled ahead in the fourth.

“The win was special for all the time and effort the student-athletes put in,” Wykon coach Curt Olexa said. “Great team effort in the win.”

Trojans win 2nd straight 63-32

CRYSTAL FALLS — Forest Park took control in the first half, building a 24-point lead at the half on its way to its second consecutive victory, a 63-32 triumph over North Dickinson on Tuesday night at Eddie Chambers Gymnasium in Crystal Falls.

Gaven Rintala smoked the nets for 21 points on seven triples. Freshman Kevin Giuliani chipped in with 14 points for the Trojans (4-6).

“We shot and moved the ball very well in our offense,” Forest Park coach Jason Price said. “It also helps when your shooting guard … hits seven 3s in the first half.

“I was happy with our effort at both ends of the court.”

“They came out and shot the ball really well early in the game,” Nordics’ coach Chris Mattson said. “Rintala gave them some spark early on and we didn’t cover him quite enough.”

The Nordics (0-10) improved their offensive output in this game after failing to score 20 points in any of their previous three games.

Junior reserve Shane Haney led North Dickinson with eight points, while Steven Holmes scored six and senior reserve Nathan Graham had five.

“Scoring’s been a problem for us and we broke 30 points in this game,” Mattson said of his injury-ravaged team. “Baby steps.”
