Norway boys, ND girls finish 2nd at D3 invite

FELCH TOWNSHIP — The Stephenson track teams swept both championships in the MHSAA Division 3 Regional 48 track and field invitational Friday at North Dickinson County High School.

The Norway boys placed a close second to the Eagles, finishing with 42 points, six behind champion Stephenson. North Central came in with 37 points for third, with Forest Park (35), North Dickinson (13), Wilson Hannahville-Nah Tah (9) and Watersmeet (1) completing the field.

In the girls event, the Eagles ran away with the crown with 77 points. The Nordics finished second at 42, with Carney-Nadeau (27), Norway (19), Forest Park (11), North Central (7) and Watersmeet (3) following.

Top four finishers in all events qualified for the U.P. Finals, which will be held at Kingsford High School on Saturday, June 4.

North Central produced the top boys performers on the day, with Trenton Naser and Luke Gorzinski recording two individual victories and one relay win.

Naser won the 110 hurdles (16.63) and the 300 hurdles (43.87), while Gorzinski scored wins in the 100 (11.38) and the 200 (23.92). Naser and Gorzinski also combined with Wyatt Raab and Lane Gorzinski to win the 800 relay (1:35.87).

The Trojans put four boys athletes into the winner’s circle — Sam McKissack (5-8 in the high jump), Tim McKissack (18-01 in the long jump), Tim Bendick (39-8 in the shot put) and Gaven Rintala (5:12.52 in the 1,600).

The Knights were topped by individual victories from Wyatt Richter (10-01 in the pole vault), Aiden Richards (117-11.5 in the discus) and Bryce Neuens (55.30 in the 400).

The host Nordics’ top finishers were David Madigan, who took second in the shot put (95-01.5) and the 1,600 relay quartet of Nick Conery, Colin LaFave, Steven Holmes and Spencer Kramer (9:45.51).

In the girls competition, North Dickinson’s Micah Lindholm and Mya Grunlund led the way with victories in the discus (86-8.75) and the 3,200 (14:03.03), respectively.

None of the other local schools left with individual champions. However, Norway’s Taylor Adams had a productive afternoon with three runner-up finishes, taking second in the 400 (1:10.83), the 800 (2:50.42) and the 3,200 (14:15.62).

Forest Park sophomore Charlie Larson paced her team with a second in the 300 hurdles (53.18), while Gracie Kleikamp (third in the high jump, 4-4), Shea LaCoursier (third in the shot put, 28-10) and the 400 relay team of Zoe LaBonte, Maddy Corrigan, Katrina Borucki and Samantha Burton) led North Central on the day.
