Kingsford swimmers dive in for multiple medals at relays

WEST ISHPEMING — In the first competitive action of the season, Kingsford High School swimmers took part in the Westwood High School Relay Meet, a strictly medal meet with no team scores.

Kingsford collected gold in five events, added three silver and one bronze in the meet Saturday, which also saw swimmers from host Westwood, Gladstone, Ishpeming/Negaunee, Houghton and Manistique.

“This was a good meet for our first-year swimmers to gain some experience in a non-pressure situation,” Kingsford head coach Jim Lindstrom said. “We had some good performances from them along with our veterans as we get into the tougher dual and tri meet part of the season.”

Gold medal winners for the Flivvers included Elyssa Englund, Olivia Rake, Sierra Scott and Petra Grubb in the girls 200 medley relay; Englund, Elena Nelson, Scott and Grubb in the girls 400 freestyle relay; Joey Lundholm, Eric Mackey, Zane Cahee and Kaden Matuszewski in the boys 200 medley relay, 200 breaststroke relay and 4×100 individual medley relay.

Alexis Stanley, Englund, Nelson and Chloe Fraker took silver in the girls 200 backstroke relay. Fraker, Stanley, Rake and Scott were silver in the girls 200 butterfly relay; and Rake, Marley Dixon, Fraker and Maggie McKinnon were silver in the girls 4×100 IM relay.

Bronze winners for the Flivvers were Baylee Koski, Halianuna Kusmitch, Maggie McKinnon and Giulia Cattivelli in the 200 breaststroke relay.

The Flivvers travel to Marquette next, taking on the reigning boys and girls UP champions on Thursday.
