IRON MOUNTAIN — An eruption of three goals in a span of two and half minutes powered Kingsford’s triumphant return to home ice Thursday at Mountain View Arena, as the Flivvers dropped Jeffers 3-1 in a Great Lakes High School Hockey Conference contest.

“It was a good win for us,” Flivvers head coach Greg Wadge said, his team improving to 9-12-0. “Our guys played three decent periods of hockey. Energy level wise and compete level, it was good.”

The game went into the first intermission in a 0-0 deadlock, but the Flivvers changed that in a hurry after returning to the ice on a power play to start the second.

Sophomore defenseman Kaleb Fornetti ignited the scoring surge when he ripped a shot from the middle of the blue line on the power play at 1:42 for his first high school goal. Initial scoring had the puck deflecting off the stick of senior Gabe Lafreniere before whizzing past Jeffers goalie Simon Rajala, but Wadge corrected the stat sheet postgame after confirming there was no deflection.

It took just 46 seconds for the Flivvers to make it a 2-0 game, as junior Nikko Burgoon connected unassisted. Another 38 seconds after that, it was sophomore Jake Crockford taking a pass from sophomore Gavin Moore to stake the Flivvers to a 3-0 advantage and force Jeffers to use its timeout to regroup.

“I thought we did a good job of moving the puck,” Wadge said. “We were good through the neutral zone. It was nice to see that first one on the power play. It was nice to see us lock that blue line and get a shot.”

Jeffers (8-9-1) held a 34-29 advantage in shots and managed to get one by Kingsford goalie Isaiah Anderson late in the second when junior Cager Osterman scored with an assist from junior Kailob Bianco. But other than that, Anderson provided a sparkling performance for the Maize and Blue, making multiple highlight reel worthy saves.

“He’s steady Eddie,” Wadge said. “Just solid again tonight. He had some huge saves.”

Anderson brought an appreciative roar out of the crowd with one particular stop in the second. He blocked an initial blast but the rebound squirted out back in front of him. A Jeffers skater instantly tried to smack it in the corner of the goal, but Anderson was able to slide and stretch out to his right and kick it away just in the nick of time.

The win gave the Flivvers a season sweep over Jeffers, after defeating the Jets up in Houghton by the same score on Dec. 6. It also preserves a chance for the Flivvers to finish the season at .500, with three regular season games remaining and just one season after winning only three games total.

“It was a good team effort,” Wadge said. “I thought all three lines played hard. If we play like that for the next few games (finishing .500) should be attainable.”

Kingsford hosts Negaunee on Feb. 2 at 6 p.m. The Flivvers traveled and defeated Negaunee 5-3 on Dec. 12. Thursday’s contest will be the annual Pink the Rink fundraiser night in support of the cancer program at Marshfield Medical Center Dickinson.
