The Florence LadyCats eked out a one-run victory in the first game of a doubleheader Tuesday against visiting Crandon and then scored four runs in the final inning to defeat the Cardinals 7-4 in the finale.

“Very windy, dusty, cold weather,” Florence coach Daniel Robinson said. “Slowed down both Crandon and our girls.”

Allison Wood earned both victories for Florence, allowing just four hits in the 10 innings played. In the two games, Wood struck out 16 and walked just four.

“Allison pitched very well again,” Robinson said.

In the opener, the LadyCats scored the lone run of the game in the second inning on singles by Sami Demuri, Ashley Peterson and Miley VanDenHeuvel.

In the second game, Florence took a 2-0 edge in the first inning, but Crandon responded with three in the second and one in the third to go up by two.

Despite that deficit, the LadyCats rallied for four runs in the fifth –the last inning played –to earn the sweep.

VanDenHeuvel sparked Florence with a home run to start the rally.

Aurora McCarthy and Ashlyn VanDenHeuvel followed with doubles and Quinn Cassidy singled to put the LadyCats in front. Florence recorded nine hits.

“It’s tough to play in such bad weather, but the girls muscled through it,” Robinson said.
