Deer season in final days; snowmobile club gears up

Outdoors report

Jim Petroff of Spread Eagle, Wis., had a very successful deer hunt, taking this trophy 13-pointer at 9:30 a.m. Nov. 16, the second day of the Michigan firearm season. He was hunting out of PPP Camp in Stambaugh Township and shot the 158-pound buck from a blind he’s used since 1985. “I’ve gotten some nice bucks, but nothing like this one,” he said. The rack carries an estimated Boone & Crockett score of 162. Petroff’s previous biggest buck was an 11-pointer that scored 136 in 1995.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources reminds hunters self-service kiosks are available to submit a sample from a harvested deer for chronic wasting disease testing.

Area locations include the Pembine Ranger Station, Wild Rivers Interpretive Center in Florence, The Corner Store in Armstrong Creek and Red Pine Amoco in Silver Cliff. Millan’s Butcher Shop in Armstrong Creek provides CWD sampling with assistance.

Also, proper carcass disposal helps slow the spread of CWD by removing potentially infected deer waste from the landscape.

A deer carcass waste dumpster is available at the Wild Rivers Interpretive Center in Florence. The Great American Disposal transfer station at W7450 Towns Road in Niagara accepts deer carcass waste on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

More information on CWD sampling and carcass disposal is available at https://dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/WildlifeHabitat/registersample.html.
