KINGSFORD — Golden K Chairperson Orice Walters welcomed 21 members and guests Monday at the organization’s weekly meeting in Kingsford.

Returning members Bob Bowman and John Corson attended the meeting as well as guests Kathy Arnold of the Dickinson-Iron Community Services Agency and Jean Alleva. Al Calcari and Alyce Derwinski led members in song and Chairperson Walters offered a prayer before coffee and donuts.

May birthdays and anniversaries were read and it was noted Bob Tachick is a resident in assisted living.

The thought for the day was provided by Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr., who once noted we must look forward, not always back.

Happy Dollar messages were read. Sue Proudfit won the Pot of Gold.

Paul Jacobs read a thank-you from the family of Jim Verrette, noting the memorial service was May 22.

Kurt Olson gave the treasurer’s report. Dues for 2022 will be collected in September.

Arnold reported on a program intended to keep independent seniors safe. The program, known as KISS, is a free telephone service that makes calls to ensure seniors are home and safe. Anyone interested in the program should call 906-774-2256, ext. 223.

The Retired and Senior Volunteer 2021 Recognition Event will be a drive-by from noon to 1 p.m. June 16 at Recreation Lanes in Iron Mountain. Reservations must be made by Friday.

Don Pedo said the scholarship for the year has been awarded to Chloe Smith, a Kingsford High School student.

Gil Engel requested six to eight volunteers for road clean-up. The date for the project will be announced at the next Golden K meeting on June 7, which will be chaired by Lois Outcelt.

New members are always welcome. Golden K meets at 10 a.m. Mondays at the Presbyterian Church on Hamilton Avenue in Kingsford.
