‘Tis the season to take extra care driving and walking. Slippery sidewalks and parking lots await the unawares. Golden K seniors have been through many winters. They took the conditions in stride and made their way to the Monday morning meeting.

Chairperson Judy Sielaff gathered the group together for opening ceremonies. Alice Derwinski warmed up the ivories with some lively prelude music. Dan Pedo stepped up to lead the singing. Christmas carols soon echoed through the room bringing warm feelings of good cheer to all. “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year.” Winning the 50-50 drawing just added to Dan’s enthusiasm for sharing holiday joy.

Guests for the day were Scott Johnson and Sue Mahony. Happy birthday wishes were sung for Joanne Hady and Bob Bowman. Happy anniversary wishes go to Paul and Myrna Ward for Dec. 18, and to Ben and Ginny Determan on Dec. 30.

Sielaff introduced the day’s guest performer Scott Johnson. He has the luck to be Judy’s brother, or is that the other way around? Johnson and his guitar entertain at many local venues. Beginning with different bands, he now performs as a soloist. Sprouting from roots in Granite Bluff, weekends were family times. Everyone joined in on singing in someone’s home or near a warm bonfire. From grandparents to the youngest, each Johnson family member gets in on the singing.

He invited the Golden K to travel along in song. He played and sang songs close to his heart. Some he learned from his father and grandfather. A special song called “Alberta” was dedicated to his sister Judy. From there began the vocal journey to “Margaritaville,” “One of These Days,”and “Take it to the Limit.” The performance came around to some long time favorites such as “Heart of my Heart,” “Let Me Call You Sweetheart,” and “Let the Rest of the World go By.” The repertoire concluded with “I’ll Be Home For Christmas.”

As the year winds down, Golden K sends joyful Christmas wishes to all. The next Golden K meeting will be Jan. 8. With winter settling in, Golden K’s policy is to cancel when schools cancel because of weather.
