Legion 11th and 12th District spring meetings announced

HANCOCK — The Upper Peninsula Association of American Legion Posts has announced the 2019 11th District and 12th District spring meetings set for Saturday, April 13.

The 11th District will meet at 11 a.m. Eastern time at the Engadine Post 290, with District Commander Wendy Sexton in charge. Lunch will be available for purchase.

The 12th District is set to meet at 10:30 a.m. Eastern time at the Hancock Post 186, with 12th District Commander Wendy Retzloff in charge. Lunch also will be available for purchase.

The annual Upper Peninsula Association of American Legion Posts has set its Legislative Dinner for Saturday, April 27, at the Uren-Cooper-Johnson American Legion Post 50 of Iron Mountain. A full slate of elected officials are expected to attend. Cocktails are at 5 p.m., with dinner at 6:30 p.m.

Tickets are $20 and can be purchased until April 22 by calling the post at 906-774-5797 or 906-282-1474.

The American Legion needs to impress upon the U.P. legislators that the legion hopes they back veteran issues. Every post should be represented by one or two members wearing their Legion caps.

The dinner is open to the Sons of American Legion, as well as American Legion Auxiliary members. This is the time to discuss issues with local legislators.

The UPAA Auxiliary spring meeting will be 1 p.m. Saturday, May 4, at the Powers American Legion Post 244. Lunch will be served at noon.

The 2019 UPAALP Summer Convention will be June 14-15 at the Menominee American Legion Post 146. More information on the convention will be announced at a later date.

The 2019 Department Boys State and Girls State programs are coming up in June. The group will travel to Grand Valley and Lansing with John Mella and chaperone Diana Mella.

Nominations are being sought for the U.P. Legionnaire of the Year award. The Legionnaire of the Year for 2018 was Gary Lane of Stambaugh Post 21.

Anyone who would like to nominate a Legion member for their longtime service should contact Carl Morrison at 906-360-7076.
