Tri-City Cinemas 8 to host mobile food pantry on Wednesday

QUINNESEC — Feeding America West Michigan is bringing a drive-through mobile food pantry to Dickinson County on Wednesday.

The new food distribution site for this year will be the Tri-City Cinemas 8 — Thomas Theatre Group, W7700 U.S. 2 in Quinnesec. The distribution was conducted in Kingsford last year.

They will start at 10 a.m., with registration at 9 a.m.

Mobile food pantries are like farmers markets on wheels that provide free supplemental food to households experiencing food insecurity. A household is considered eligible if it participates in any of a number of government food programs, meets low income guidelines, or is simply in need of emergency food.

No identification or proof of eligibility is required, although a volunteer will ask a few basic questions about the customer’s address, household and eligibility at the time of registration.

One vehicle may pick up food for up to three households. FAWM requires a signed note with the same basic information for each additional household.

Organizers ask that customers enter via the Baler Road entrance at the large green and black GFL sign on the west side of the parking lot. Volunteers should enter using the U.S. 2 entrance on the east end, and will be guided to a volunteer parking area.

The organizers also suggest that participants bring boxes, laundry baskets or totes for volunteers to place the food, as most food will not be bagged or boxed.

This week’s distribution is being coordinated by Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Iron Mountain.

The mobile food pantry will arrive monthly on the second Wednesday. The Tri-City Cinemas will be the location for distributions through May, then resuming in September. A site for the summer months is still in the planning stages. Check local news sources for updates on changes or cancellations.

The FAWM Mobile Food Pantry coordinated by Holy Trinity Episcopal Church is not connected with the FAWM Mobile Food Pantry in Norway, although people often volunteer with both. The partner agency for Norway is Crossroads Alliance.

For any questions regarding this mobile food pantry or for information on volunteering, call the site coordinator, Anda Tavonatti, at 906-239-6778. Please do not call Tri-City Cinemas.
