AARP to offer free movie screenings at select locations

LANSING — AARP Michigan will have free showings of the acclaimed feature film “The Holdovers” from director Alexander Payne at various locations.

These special screenings, scheduled on select dates in July, are part of AARP’s Movies for Grownups, films made by grownups for grownups.

It will be shown locally at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Tri-City Cinema 8 in Quinnesec.

“The Holdovers” (2023), set in 1970, follows a curmudgeonly instructor (Paul Giamatti) at an elite New England prep school who is forced to remain on campus during Christmas break to babysit the handful of students with nowhere to go.

Eventually he forms an unlikely bond with one of them — a damaged, brainy troublemaker (newcomer Dominic Sessa), and with the school’s head cook, who has just lost a son in Vietnam, (Da’Vine Joy Randolph).

This movie is rated R and has a run time of 2 hours and 14 minutes.
