KINGSFORD — It happened. The sun came up bright and early and the temperature rose with it.

As the Golden K members began gathering for their meeting, spirits were running high.

With a busy day ahead, Chair Judy Sielaff got everyone settled in quickly. As opening ceremonies concluded, Alyce Derwinski adjusted her music and began making the piano yield its melodic strings. Lois Outcelt stepped up to lead the singers. Oldies rolled out and filled the room with the music only heard on Monday mornings at the First Presbyterian Church in Kingsford.

Guests welcomed were Bill Menza and Jeff Harry. Happy Birthday was sung for Diane Aune, Dawn Calcari and Ron Jouppi.

Members were reminded of the children with special needs picnic at City Park scheduled for May 19. Set-up will begin at 8:30 a.m. and many hands are needed for inside and outside preparation.

Even though Judy Sielaff was not sitting in her lucky chair, she managed to win the 50-50 drawing.

Happy dollars included Candy Bucheuski’s grandson graduating with an registered nurse degree, and everyone grateful for warm weather.

Sielaff introduced Jeff Harry as the speaker for the day, a realtor with Stephens Realty.

He set up what appeared to be a PowerPoint presentation but turned out to be a real estate-themed bingo game. He handed out a cheat sheet, small packages of M&Ms and bingo cards. That got everyone’s full attention.

Sielaff displayed pictures and used them to explained how the real estate business works. Using pictures of local places, homes and neighborhoods, he had the group remembering history to mark their bingo cards.

As pictures came on the screen, areas were identified and each senior checked off their card using the M&Ms. Bingo winners were rewarded with a Tootsie Roll and a lesson.

Harry explained each picture and how the system works between the buyer, seller and realtor. Using modern technology, cameras, drones and a good deal of diligence, that knowledge is put into play. The realty business is not all about bingo games.

As a retired teacher, Harry used this method to show how valuable knowledge is for success. He recommended having a qualified inspector go through the home to identify repairs and concerns before making a final purchase.

Current technology enables a realtor to take pictures inside of the home room by room. Drones capture the home and surrounding area from the sky. Interested buyers local and remote can access the views and see the home as an interactive 3D virtual experience. Using modern techniques, Harry finds a way to be successful and fully enjoy his chosen second career.

The presentation was very informative with time for questions and answers afterwards.

Golden K will meet at 10 a.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church in Kingsford with Jessica Batten bringing information about an organization called Compassion for Chemo.

Starting at $3.50/week.
