Seaborg to receive UW Colleges award

MARINETTE, Wis. – John Seaborg, most recent past-president of the UW-Marinette Foundation, has been named the recipient of the 2014 University of Wisconsin Colleges and University of Wisconsin-Extension Chancellor’s Friend & Advocate Award.

This statewide award is bestowed once a year upon one individual or organization outside the UW Colleges and UW-Extension that have given substantial support to one or both institutions’ outreach mission at the local, state, national or international level.

Seaborg is the original architect of the UW-Marinette campus, built in 1965. Over the past 50 years throughout the evolution of the campus, John has been a supportive presence and active contributor to its growth and success.

From the initial idea of building a University of Wisconsin campus in Marinette, through the upcoming 50th anniversary celebration (2015), John has been at the forefront of designing and implementing the campus facilities and infrastructure.

In recent years, Seaborg provided the drawings to help UW-Marinette redesign the layout of the administrative suite, moving Student Affairs and Business Services up front, to better serve student need. He also keeps his eye on what is happening in the community to find ways to position the campus for future success.

He just completed eight years of service on the UW-Marinette Foundation Board, including serving as its vicepresident and president. In addition to providing ongoing facilities and equipment support,

Seaborg has also been instrumental in supporting the mission of the campus, and has lent his support in every decade since the beginning of the campus.

“John has provided 50 years of ongoing support for our campus,” said Dean Paula Langteau, who wrote the nomination with support from County Board Chair Vilas Schroeder and three other campus and community members, “and we are so pleased he is being recognized with this award for his continued, vital commitment.”

Seaborg will be recognized at the Chancellor’s Awards Ceremony and Reception on Thursday, Sept. 18, in Madison, Wis.

UW-Marinette is celebrating 50 years of providing quality educational opportunities and industry-specific training for students and local businesses in the greater Marinette and Menominee areas.
