IRON MOUNTAIN – On Monday, May 27, area organizations will hold Memorial Day ceremonies to honor the men and women who died for their country while serving in the U.S. military.

Memorial Day ceremonies scheduled throughout the area on May 27 are listed below.

IRON MOUNTAIN

Memorial Day services in Iron Mountain will begin with a parade assembly in front of The Daily News office, located at 215 E. Ludington St., at 8:20 a.m. The parade will march to the Dickinson County Courthouse at 8:40 a.m.

The program at the courthouse will start at 9 a.m.

Chuck Lantz, director of the Office of Veteran Affairs, will serve as the master of ceremonies, Rev. David Anderson will give the invocation, Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center Director Jim Rice will serve as the main speaker, and Ray Hamm of the Marine Corps League will serve as Officer of the Day.

Local officials, including representatives from the Dickinson County Board of Commissioners, Iron Mountain City Council, Kingsford City Council, and the Breitung Township Board of Trustees, will be introduced.

In addition, veterans’ groups, clubs, and past state commanders will be recognized.

There will be musical performances by the Iron Mountain and Kingsford High School Bands, Kingsford Chorale, and the 4H club.

The Boy Scouts, Brownies, Cub Scouts, and Girl Scouts will lead the Pledge of Allegiance.

In case of inclement weather, the program will be cancelled.

BREITUNG TOWNSHIP

The Kingsford Carpenter Clash American Legion Post 363 will hold a Memorial Day service at the Breitung Township Cemetery in Quinnesec at 10:15 a.m.

Gary Chapman will serve as the master of ceremonies, Lewis Adams will serve as the invocation chaplain, John Gravold, who is retired from the U.S. Marine Corps, will serve as the main speaker, and Kingsford Middle School students Owen Petschar, Corey Cootware, and Alex Shanks will serve as the student speakers.

Both the Kingsford High School Band and the Kingsford Chorale will perform musical selections.

Local scouts will lead the Pledge of Allegiance.

There will be a flag presentation from the Leo Badish family, a reading by Dan Chapman from the Kingsford Sons of the American Legion, and recognition of Eagle Scout Zachary Kemnitz.

Immediately following the ceremony, post 363 members will go to Memorial Gardens to conduct a short program for the veterans buried there.

NORWAY

Memorial Day services in Norway will begin with a parade assembly on Railroad Avenue at 10:15 a.m. The parade will step off at 10:30 a.m.

At 11 a.m., there will be a ceremony at the Norway Cemetery.

Terry Backlund will serve as master of ceremonies, VFW Chaplain George Olson will give the invocation, Norway High School student Bailey Grayvold will read “Flanders Fields,” and Rev. James Danielson will give the address.

The Norway City Band will perform.

HERMANSVILLE-FAITHORN

Services will begin at 5 a.m. with the raising of the flag to half-mast at the Riverside and Meyer Township cemeteries.

At 8 a.m., members of the Floriano-Stecker American Legion Post 340, the auxiliary, the Vietnam Veterans Association, Boy Scouts, and Cub Scouts will meet at the post club rooms.

There will be services at the Riverside Cemetery in Faithorn at 9 a.m., the Menominee River in Faithorn at 9:30 a.m., Hermansville Lake in Hermansville at 10:30 a.m., the Veterans’ Memorial Marker at 10:45 a.m., and the Meyer Township Cemetery in Hermansville at 11:15 a.m.

Veteran Dale LaPalme will serve as the main speaker for the services at the Riverside Cemetery and the Meyer Township Cemetery.

FELCH-FOSTER CITY

The Felch-Breen VFW Post 4803 will start Memorial Day ceremonies by assembling at the VFW clubhouse at Norway Lake at 8 a.m.

All VFW members, as well as all area veterans, are encouraged to participate.

Services will be held in Ralph at 9 a.m., Felch at 10:15 a.m., and Foster City at 11 a.m.

The North Dickinson High School Band will perform at the Felch and Foster City services.

After all three ceremonies are complete, participants and the public are invited to attend an open house at the VFW clubhouse at Norway Lake. Food, refreshments, and music will be provided.

CHANNING-SAGOLA

Services will begin at 9 a.m. at the Channing Cemetery.

Greg Harper, commander of the Cuculi-Baraga American Legion Post 168, will serve as both the master of ceremonies and the main speaker.

The North Dickinson High School Band will perform.

CRYSTAL FALLS-AMASA

The East Side Veterans Council’s Memorial Day ceremony will begin in Crystal Falls with a parade lineup at the intersection of Washington Avenue and Logan Street at 8:30 a.m.

At 9 a.m., the parade will step off and march to Evergreen Memorial Cemetery for the service.

Christopher Sholander will serve as master of ceremonies, Rev. Nate Reed of the United Methodist Church will give the invocation, and Tony Scarlassara will be the featured speaker.

The Forest Park High School Band will perform.

Following the service, participants will travel to Amasa for the parade and service there. Veterans and auxiliaries will make a stop at the 82nd Airborne Division Memorial on U.S. 141 for a wreath ceremony.

In Amasa, there will be a parade downtown. Buses will then take participants to the Hematite Cemetery for the service. The service will be the same as the one in Crystal Falls.

In case of inclement weather, the parade will be cancelled and the service will be held at the Forest Park High School gym at 9:30 a.m.

BATES TOWNSHIP

Services at the Bates Township Cemetery start at 8 a.m. will a flag raising ceremony by members of the VFW Post 3134 of Iron River.

Kerry Rivard will serve as vocalist, Pastor Dan Waters of the Iron River Bible Church will give the invocation, and Iron County Veterans Service Officer Joy DeNicola will be the main speaker.

There will be a continental breakfast at the Bates Township Hall after the service.

In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will take place at the Bates Township Hall.

IRON RIVER

Memorial Day services in Iron River will begin with the firing of a volley at the old city cemetery at 8 a.m.

At 9:30 a.m. the West Side Veterans Council will hold a wreath ceremony at the Veterans Memorial on Genesee Street.

Parade lineup starts at 10 a.m. on River Avenue. It will then march west on Genesee Street to Sixth Avenue.

At 11 a.m., services will be held at Resthaven Cemetery.

Darin Long will serve as master of ceremonies, West Side Veterans Council Adjutant Don Wolf will lead the invocation, and U.S. Congressman Dan Benishek, R-Crystal Falls, will serve as the main speaker.

STAMBAUGH

The ceremony at Stambaugh Cemetery will start at 10:30 a.m.

Marie Brunswick will serve as master of ceremonies, Rev. James Swanson of the First Covenant Church will give the invocation, and veteran Dave Juncer will serve as the featured speaker.

The West Iron County High School Band will perform.

BEECHWOOD

There will be a ceremony at Rosehill Cemetery beginning at 8 a.m.

Dorothy Javoroski will serve as master of ceremonies, Rev. Gary Markworth of St. Paul Lutheran Church will give the invocation, and veteran Major Steve Tegge will be the main speaker.

Refreshments will be available at the Beechwood Hall after the service.

FLORENCE-

COMMONWEALTH

The American Legion Post 211 will hold services at Woodland Cemetery in Florence at 10:30 a.m. There will be a service at the Commonwealth Cemetery at 11 a.m.

AURORA-HOMESTEAD

The annual Memorial Day program will begin at 11 a.m. in front of the Veterans’ Memorial at the Homestead-Aurora Cemetery, which is located three miles west of Aurora on County Road B.

Kevin Fraker will provide music and Colonel Kathleen Osterberg Knapp will serve as the special speaker.

Colonel Knapp is an Aurora native who is currently stationed at Fort McNair in Washington D.C. In more than 29 years of continuous active duty, she has served in the Army Corps of Engineers, as a resource manager at the Pentagon, as a liaison officer at the U.S. Embassy in Pakistan, and as an assistant to the president.

Refreshments will be provided by the Aurora Free Church.

Please bring a lawn chair.

TIPLER-LONG LAKE

The VFW Post 3635 will hold services at Martin Cemetery in Tipler at 10 a.m., and at the Long Lake Cemetery at 10:45 a.m.

NIAGARA

The Niagara Cretton-Tutas American Legion Post 136 and Auxiliary Post 136-9 will begin Memorial Day activities at 5:30 p.m. with a parade lineup at the clubhouse.

Members of the public are invited to participate in the march from the clubhouse to the Niagara Cemetery on Washington Avenue at 5:50 p.m.

Services will commence at 6 p.m. in the veterans’ section of the cemetery.

American Legion Chaplain Joe Zychowski will serve as master of ceremonies, and veteran Gilbert Engel will be the featured speaker.

Other participants will include the Niagara High School Band, Miss Niagara Kaitlyn Lundin, Miss Niagara-elect Madisin DePas, Badger Boys State delegates Nathan Moll and Dominic Spigarelli, Badger Boys State alternate Joey Swanson, Badger Girls State delegates Madisin DePas and Emilee Pellegrini, Badger Girls State alternate Marah Harvath, Niagara 4-H members, and Niagara Boy Scouts.

Following the service, participants and the public are invited to attend a reception at the Niagara Senior Center on Washington Avenue, where refreshments will be served.

In case of inclement weather, the service will be held in the Niagara High School theatre.

PEMBINE-DUNBAR

The Memorial Day service at the Pembine Cemetery will start at 10:30 a.m. Services at the Dunbar Cemetery will begin at approximately 11:30 a.m.
