Region under flood watch; heavy rains expected

The National Weather Service office in Marquette has placed 11 Upper Peninsula counties, including Dickinson and Iron, under a flood watch through Wednesday evening.

The watch also includes Keweenaw, Ontonagon, Houghton, Baraga, Marquette, Alger, Gogebic, Menominee and Delta counties.

The NWS states that multiple rounds of moderate to heavy rain will occur at times from this morning through Wednesday evening across western and central Upper Michigan.

Through this afternoon, most of the heavy rain will focus over central Upper Michigan. However, late today through tonight and Wednesday, the potential for heavy rain will expand over much of the west half of upper Michigan, the NWS predicts.

The rain can be expected to end late Wednesday, according to the NWS. By that time, most locations across west and central Upper Michigan will have received a total rainfall of 3 to 4 inches, with isolated higher amounts possible. These totals include the rain that fell on Monday, the NWS stated.

The Iron Mountain-Kingsford Wastewater Treatment Plant reported 1.62 inches had fallen as of this morning.
