Winter storm warning for Dickinson, Iron counties

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for Dickinson and Iron counties starting at 9 a.m. Central time Thursday and extending through midnight Friday.

Heavy snow is expected to begin late Thursday morning into Thursday evening, with snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour and total accumulations of 7 to 10 inches, according to the NWS office in Marquette. A brief period of light snow and freezing rain is expected late tonight as well.

Though snow will diminish Thursday night, northwest winds of 20 to 30 mph may result in patchy blowing snow in open areas.

Power outages and tree damage are possible for areas that still have significant ice on power lines and trees. Travel could be very difficult, if not impossible during the heavier snow.

The winter storm warning includes all of the Upper Peninsula and northern Wisconsin, and extends into Friday though the northern and eastern parts of the U.P.
