Vulcan man sentenced on third OWI conviction

ERICK LARSON

IRON MOUNTAIN — A Vulcan man convicted for driving drunk will serve 10 months in jail and spend three years on probation.

Erick Larson, 41, was sentenced Tuesday in Dickinson County Circuit Court for operating while intoxicated, third offense, a felony punishable by up to five years in prison.

Larson was convicted as a three-time habitual offender and could have served as many as 10 years in prison.

Larson had initially been charged as a four-time habitual offender — which would have increased the maximum sentence to life in prison — but Chief Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Kristin Kass reduced the notice in exchange for Larson’s guilty plea Jan. 6.

Additionally, Kass dismissed a charge of reckless driving, a 93-day misdemeanor; and alcohol-open container in vehicle, a 90-day misdemeanor.

According to the criminal complaint, Dickinson County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Larson on Oct. 28 after he intentionally crashed his vehicle into a tree while speeding on County Road 577 in Norway Township.

Larson had an open can of Four Loko in his vehicle and smelled of intoxicants. The complaint also stated Larson admitted to “using a prescription more than he should.”
