Kingsford offers variety of parks, playgrounds, recreation sites

Our Town Kingsford

KINGSFORD — The Lodal Park sports field complex and Cowboy Lake’s swimming beach are two of the main attractions in Kingsford’s parks system.

In addition to those popular sites, the city has a number of smaller parks and playgrounds. Fifteen city facilities are listed in Kingsford’s recreation plan, ranging from neighborhood mini-parks to full-sized regional facilities.

The sites include:

— Cowboy Lake Park. Located between Cowboy Lake and the Menominee River (near a We Energies hydroelectric dam), this 3.5-acre regional park provides a 100-foot swimming beach. Amenities include a pavilion, picnic tables, bathhouse, boat launch, fishing pier, playground equipment and open field. There are 50 parking spaces.

— Lodal Park. A 21-acre regional park on Breitung Avenue, the Lodal site features three baseball and softball fields, four tennis courts, a football/soccer field, an open field, playground equipment, horseshoe pits, basketball court, a pavilion, restrooms and picnic tables. The city is applying this year for a Michigan Department of Natural Resources recreation grant to add pickleball courts and new playground equipment at Lodal Park. The total cost would be $180,000, with the city providing a $45,000 match.
