Two Dickinson commissioners will face opposition

IRON MOUNTAIN — At least two Dickinson County Board races will be contested in November, based on nominating petitions filed for the offices.

In Iron Mountain, District 2 incumbent Democrat Kevin Pirlot is challenged by Republican Ann Martin, a 14-year commissioner he unseated in 2018.

In District 3, which includes parts of Iron Mountain and Breitung Township, incumbent Republican Barbara Kramer will again face opposition from Democrat Dale Alessandrini, the current Iron Mountain mayor.

Pirlot prevailed over Martin 1,006 to 944 in 2018, while Kramer held off Alessandrini, 1,218 to 1,046. Kramer, now in her eighth year on the board, also defeated Alessandrini in 2016.

Incumbent commissioners without opposition are Board Chairman Henry Wender of Breitung Township, a Republican; Joseph Stevens of Kingsford, also a Republican; and John Degenaer Jr. of Norway, a Democrat.

Wender has served more than 31 years on the board, though not consecutively. Stevens is in his 26th year and Degenaer is serving his 22nd year.

County officials so far unopposed for re-election are Prosecuting Attorney Lisa Richards, Sheriff Scott Rutter, Clerk-Register of Deeds Dolly Cook, Treasurer Lorna Carey, Mine Inspector Steven Smith and Drain Commissioner Kevin Trevillian. Rutter and Cook are Democrats, while the other four officials are Republicans.

Tuesday was the filing deadline for Republican and Democratic Party candidates for partisan county offices. Candidates without political party affiliation must file qualifying petitions for the Nov. 3 general election ballot no later than 4 p.m. July 16.

Michigan’s state primary election for partisan candidates is scheduled for Aug. 4, although there will be no contests on the ballot for any of the Dickinson County offices.

In Iron County, only one candidate — incumbent Democrat Patti Peretto in District 1 — has filed for the county board.

Sharon Leonoff, incumbent Democrat in District 4, and Tim Aho, incumbent Republican in District 5, did not submit nominating petitions as partisan candidates. The other incumbents — Raymond Coates in District 3 and Michael Stafford in District 2 — serve without party affiliation.

Candidates filing without opposition were Prosecuting Attorney Melissa Powell, Sheriff Mark Valesano, Clerk-Register of Deeds Julie Kezerle, Treasurer Melanie Camps and Mine Inspector Thomas Karvala. All are Democrats, except Kezerle, who filed as a Republican.

Ernest Schmidt, an incumbent, and Ray Margoni are Democratic candidates for one seat on the five-member Iron County Road Commission.
