New virus cases on rise in UP, Wisconsin counties

The region had new COVID-19 positives reported in at least five counties Thursday, including a fifth active case in Iron County and three more each in Marinette and Forest counties in Wisconsin.

The Dickinson-Iron District Health Department posted the fifth Iron County case late Thursday morning but provided no other details. It continued to list six positives in Dickinson County with two deaths, three recoveries and one active case.

State health officials had a new COVID-19 positive in Menominee County, along with two probable cases in that county and one new probable in Delta County.

And the Western Upper Peninsula Health Department listed three new positives in Baraga County.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services’ data site Thursday showed Baraga and Keweenaw counties with one confirmed virus case each; Alger County two confirmed cases; Chippewa County two confirmed cases and one probable; Luce County three confirmed cases; Schoolcraft County four confirmed cases; Iron County five confirmed cases; Gogebic County six confirmed cases and a death; Dickinson County six confirmed cases, one probable and two deaths; Mackinac County eight confirmed cases; Houghton County 11 confirmed cases; Menominee County 12 confirmed cases and two probable; Delta County 18 confirmed cases, four probable and two deaths; and Marquette County 63 confirmed cases and 11 deaths. The MDHHS updates its figures each afternoon and does not always match local reporting.

The MDHHS also earlier separately had prison inmates as positive in Luce and Chippewa counties.

Using state figures, the Upper Peninsula as of Thursday had 144 confirmed positives and 16 deaths. Ontonagon remains the only county in the Upper Peninsula and in Michigan not to have at least one positive coronavirus test.

The MDHHS reported 353 confirmed new COVID-19 cases statewide Thursday for a total of 62,306 to date. The state had 19 new deaths for 5,887 to date.

Dickinson County Healthcare System on Thursday showed three cases from Dickinson County and eight cases from other counties; those counties are not identified. DCHS has tested 1,085 people for COVID-19, with 11 positive, 1,046 negative and 28 results still pending. DCHS noted there are several additional sources of testing in Dickinson County.

In Wisconsin, health departments in both Forest and Marinette counties Thursday each indicated three new COVID-19 positives.

Forest County health officials said the individuals are isolating at home. Marinette County had no further information on the new positives.

For the Wisconsin counties in the region, the state Department of Health Services’ COVID-19 data site Thursday listed Marinette County with 48 cases and three deaths; Forest County 38 cases and three deaths; Vilas County 10 cases; Florence County three cases; and Iron County two cases and a death.

Iron County in Wisconsin also reported a third positive Thursday on its Facebook page that was not yet included in the Wisconsin statistics.

Statewide, Wisconsin on Thursday had recorded 26,227 cases of COVID-19, with 766 deaths, according to the DHS data site.
