Man in Sagola reported injured by fireworks

IRON MOUNTAIN — A 50-year-old man severely injured his left hand in a fireworks accident on private property in Sagola Township on Saturday night, according to Michigan State Police at the Iron Mountain post.

The accident was reported at about 8 p.m. by a witness who said the man was setting up fireworks when she heard a boom and saw him lying on the ground. As she was unsure responders would be able to locate the camp where the incident occurred, she transported the man to Silver Lake Resort in Sagola Township.

Highway M-95 was briefly closed to allow the victim to be transported to UP Health System in Marquette by a Valley Med Flight helicopter. State police believe the man was later sent to a hospital in Green Bay, Wis.

According to a state police press release, the witness described the firework as a “mortar” but couldn’t provide further details.

Troopers provided treatment and assistance at the site along with STAR EMS, Integrity Care and Sagola Township Fire Department.

Troopers said alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the accident.
