Township offices, ND millage on Tuesday’s ballot

IRON MOUNTAIN — A handful of township races are contested in Tuesday’s primary election in Dickinson County while voters in the North Dickinson County School District will be asked to approve a bonding issue.

In Sagola Township, millage levies for fire protection, ambulance protection and road repairs are up for renewal.

The 1 mill levy for North Dickinson County schools would help finance two new buses and technology upgrades and equipment, such as updating the computer labs and other electric devices throughout the school, said Michael Roell, the district’s finance/athletic director. The district also may look at some new furnishings, such as tables and chairs, for the library as well.

Roell noted it’s been four to five years since they last invested in new technology at the schools in Felch Township. “Especially with some distance learning possibilities, we have some areas we definitely need to improve on,” he said. “It’s time.”

The proposed measure is similar to what district voters approved in March 2016 in asking for a 1 mill levy, or $1 per $1,000 in taxable property value, for two new buses, computers and other technology. As in 2016, this proposed levy would generate about $300,000 over three years, Roell said. And as in 2016, the school board would drop an almost equal amount from its sinking fund millage, which can only be used for building projects, not equipment purchases. So district residents should see little effect on their property tax bills if they authorize the measure, Roell said.

Primary elections for township offices also will take place across the county Tuesday.

Breen Township: Several races are contested on the Republican side. Katie Dixon and Claude Siders are running for treasurer, while Brenda R. Cary and Brian Farwell are candidates for one constable slot. There are three Republican candidates for two trustee seats — Kimberly L. Cary, Mick Reynolds and Travis Woodward. Also in the Republican primary, Rob Massie is unopposed for supervisor and incumbent Gus Murray is unopposed for clerk. The only Democratic candidate in Breen Township is Kevin E. Cary, an incumbent who will seek to retain his trustee seat in November.

Breitung Township: All candidates are Republicans. Running unopposed are incumbents Denny Olson, supervisor; Samantha Neuens, clerk; and Carol Taylor, treasurer. There are five candidates for four trustee seats — Ben Peterson, Paul J. Taff and incumbents Brent Johnson, Aaron Rochon and Rich Wales.

There is an additional trustee seat to be filled. Sagola Township voters will also be asked to renew three millages:

— 1 mill, or $1 per $1,000 of taxable value, for two years for fire protection, raising an estimated $50,870 when first levied in 2021.

— 0.75 mills, or 75 cents per $1,000 of taxable value, for two years for ambulance protection, raising an estimated $38,150 when first levied in 2021.

— 1 mill, or $1 per $1,000 of taxable value for four years for road repairs, raising an estimated $50,870 in the first year, 2021.

No other races are contested on the ballot, but there are three candidates for two trustee seats to be decided in November. Trustee candidates are incumbent Democrats Rick J.
