Florence County in need of rescue squad personnel

FLORENCE, Wis. — The Florence Rescue Squad, along with the Aurora-Homestead Rescue Squad, is looking for people willing to serve as first responders and emergency medical technicians.

The Florence Rescue Squad, which covers the towns of Florence, Commonwealth, Fence and Fern, is scheduled to end its service March 1, due to a shortage of personnel. Aurora-Homestead is also considering closure, the Florence Rescue Squad said in a press release.

Municipal leaders, emergency medical services directors, county board committees and police have been working to sustain the squads. But without a substantial increase in personnel, service cannot continue, officials said.

State statute requires each town provide at least two licensed responders 24 hours a day.

The rescue squad acknowledges its continued service would require a financial component from each municipality it serves, but considers personnel more important–even stating individuals willing to serve be compensated. Outsourcing EMS services to a private company would come at a significant cost.

There are options available to complete required training, including virtual courses. High school students can complete training and obtain their national registry so they may file for a Wisconsin license once they turn 18. Registered nurses can join using their current credentials.

Anyone interested in helping can call Florence County Clerk Donna Trudell at 715-528-4762 or email dtrudell@co.florence.wi.us. Those interested should include their name, township, phone number, and credentials.
