IRON MOUNTAIN — Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain had to wait a few days before the arrival of the first baby of 2021.

Kyle and Ashley Staples of Vulcan welcomed their third child at Jan. 3.

Emma Grace Staples was born at 12:26 p.m. She weighed 8 pounds, 12 ounces and was 20 1/2 inches long.

She joins sister Adalyn, 4, and brother Isaac, 2.

“I was surprised when they told us that she would most likely be the first baby of the New Year,” Ashley Staples said. “She wasn’t due until Jan. 11, so she did come a little early.”

The birth went smoothly and both were able to go home after 24-hour labs were done, she said.

“I prayed for rest and a quick and healthy delivery,” Staples said.

Emma’s siblings also were anxious to get their new baby sister home.

“They have a baby cousin that just turned six months old, so they have been able to ‘practice,'” she said.

Staples said the pandemic didn’t change her delivery experience at DCHS. “The staff in the OB department is fantastic — very kind and encouraging,” she said. “They were great for all three of our children.”

As for the name Emma — the couple just liked it.

“Having the first baby of the New Year brought some extra excitement to the day, but most of all, we are just praising God for the blessing of another wonderful addition to our family,” Staples said. “Everyone is doing very well.”

Emma’s grandparents are Shawn and Donna Staples of Vulcan and Ted and Milissa Lundin of Niagara, Wis.

Starting at $3.50/week.
