Dickinson earns top patient safety grade from Leapfrog

IRON MOUNTAIN — Dickinson, now part of Marshfield Clinic Health System, was honored with an “A” grade in a report from the Leapfrog Group, a nonprofit organization that grades nearly 3,000 hospitals across the country.

The Leapfrog Group focuses on improving health quality and protecting patients from hospital errors.

“Our medical team members are committed to doing their best every day to provide high quality, safe care to all of our patients,” said Chuck Nelson, chief administrative officer of Dickinson. “The excellent safety grade confirms our commitment to deliver exceptional care to the families in our community.”

Developed under the guidance of a national expert panel, the Leapfrog Group uses 28 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign grades to U.S. acute-care hospitals twice per year. These measures assess errors, accidents, injuries and infections, while judging the systems the hospitals keep in place to assure the safety of their patients.

The national watchdog group assigns “A” through “F” grades. Dickinson has been recognized with an outstanding A rating from Leapfrog Group’s spring 2022 Hospital Patient Safety Grade.

“The Dickinson team works tirelessly to provide the safest care possible for our patients,” said Nelson. “Our comprehensive protocols include communication to patients about medications, multiple safety checks to prevent medication errors, vigilance in preventing medical errors and infections, and additional safety measures to increase positive outcomes. Our A grade from Leapfrog reaffirms our effectiveness in monitoring and delivering care benefiting the overall health of our patients.”

Servicing northern Wisconsin and the central Upper Peninsula for more than 70 years, Dickinson is a 49-bed hospital with a team of more than 60 active physicians.

UP Health System-Marquette has also received an “A” Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade for the spring 2022 measurement period. UPHS had maintained a “B” grade throughout the previous six grading cycles.

Dickinson received a “C” grade in fall 2021, following “A” grades through the previous four cycles.
