Murder charged in eastern U.P.

ST. IGNACE — A Mackinac County woman has been charged with murder after a shooting victim was found just north of Hessel, according to the Michigan State Police St. Ignace post.

Troopers were called to the scene late Thursday evening for a report of a disturbance involving a firearm at a home. Upon arrival, troopers observed a deceased 73-year-old man who had sustained an apparent gunshot wound.

A short time later the police located 34-year-old Joelle Chamberlain down the road from the scene. Troopers saw “numerous signs” that the woman may have been involved in the homicide, so she was taken into custody.

Police say the woman is a relative of the deceased victim. Both of the people involved are from the Hessel and Pickford areas. The woman has been charged with open murder and arraigned in the 92nd District Court. No bond was set.

Chamberlain is currently lodged at the Mackinac County Jail. If convicted, she could face up to life in prison.

The name of the victim is not being released at this time. Troopers were assisted by the Mackinac County Sheriff’s Department, Sault Tribal Police, Clark Township EMS and the Michigan State Police Forensic Lab in Grayling.
