State grant to aid 2024 IM paving project

IRON MOUNTAIN — A paving project next year on North Milwaukee Avenue will cover about 0.75 miles, aided by a $210,000 grant obtained through the Michigan Department of Transportation.

Iron Mountain City Council agreed Monday to seek engineering proposals that will be due July 3.

The budgeted local match is $72,000, or 20% of the initial project estimate, though City Manager Jordan Stanchina said it’s likely to be higher. “It was estimated three years ago,” he said.

The grant comes through MDOT’s Small Urban Program, which uses federal money to help areas with a population of 5,000 to 49,999. The cities of Iron Mountain, Kingsford and Norway are linked as one unit eligible for even-year funding under MDOT’s rotation schedule.

The resurfacing will cover about 3,900 feet of North Milwaukee Avenue from Lehman Avenue to the Breitung Township border, Stanchina said. A culvert will also be evaluated.

Engineering costs will be paid by the city.

In other action, the council:

— Heard several neighbors of R&A Outdoor Services at 114 Fifth St. seek a review of whether the business is in compliance with the city’s zoning ordinance. The complaints are about noise and the mobilization and parking of heavy equipment. The city will look into it.

— Learned that the tires on its new Towmaster T40LP deck-over trailer had to be replaced at a cost of about $1,800. Mayor Dale Alessandrini, who volunteered to pick up the trailer from the dealer to save delivery costs, acknowledged it was his error in handling the trailer that caused the damage. Council member Ken Clawson brought it to the public’s attention, saying Stanchina should have consulted the council. Alessandrini has a commercial driver’s license and the trip was within the city’s protocols, Stanchina said, but the outcome was unfortunate.

— Approved a $1,000 contribution to Sons of American Legion Post No. 50 for the annual Independence Day fireworks display scheduled for dusk July 4 from Millie Hill. Total budget is about $17,000, according to Michael Laydon, fireworks chairman. A permit for Spielbauer Fireworks Co. of Green Bay, Wis., to put on the show was also authorized.

— Will list several pieces of used equipment on the Wisconsin Surplus online bidding site. They include a 1997 Chevrolet pickup truck, a 1996 Hurst trailer, a trash pump and a broken arrow board.

— Reappointed Alessandrini as the city’s representative on the Dickinson County Construction Code Commission.
