New member chosen for Dickinson library board

IRON MOUNTAIN — Pamela Trask of Breitung Township, a past critic of a Dickinson County Library program, will serve as the newest member of the library board.

Trask was appointed by the county board Monday, receiving support from Chairman Henry Wender and commissioners Joe Stevens and Ann Martin.

Ten-year board incumbent Katy Driscoll of Sagola Township applied for reappointment to the five-member panel but was backed only by Commissioner John Degenaer Jr.

Commissioner Barbara Kramer voted for a third applicant, Anthony Grudnoski of Quinnesec.

Trask, a retired educator, said in her application that she considers the library “in addition to our local churches and service organizations, an integral hub of our community.”

At a June 12 meeting, Trask joined Martin in objecting to an “Intro to Tarot Reading” program offered at the library to tweens, teens and adults. “This is not something our county library should be supporting,” Trask had told the board.

Martin, a month later, said the program was reportedly well-received.

Trask has also approached the board to promote the doctrine of the lesser magistrate. She suggested Monday it’s the duty of commissioners to “stand between the tyranny” and refuse obedience to unjust laws passed by higher authorities.

Commissioners didn’t directly discuss their library votes, though Stevens said “sometimes diversity isn’t bad on boards.”

Kramer, meanwhile, said Driscoll “has served long and well” on the panel.

Kevin Pirlot, a former commissioner, said Driscoll was “a dedicated servant” during the two years he was a liaison to the library board. “I hope you give her a big thank you and appreciation for what she’s done,” he said during citizen’s time.

Several other citizens spoke, including Steve Anderson of Iron Mountain, who said he wants “immoral material kept from fingertip reach of children.”

Trask will serve a five-year term, effective in January and running through 2028.

In December, in a 3-2 vote, the board had reappointed Donna Hayes of Norway to a five-year term on the library board when Grudnoski and Trask were also applicants. Martin and Kramer at that time voted for Grudnoski, also a retired educator.

Other library board members are Chairman William Cummings, Wanda Khor and Robert Lundholm.

In another matter, Grudnoski and Diana Oman were reappointed to the Dickinson County Fair Board, serving three-year terms through the end of 2026. There were three vacancies but only two applicants.

Degenaer objected to the process, saying the vote was too soon. Although current terms won’t expire until the end of the year, it was advertised and members were reportedly notified their applications for reappointment were due.

“Why three months early?” Degenaer asked of County Clerk Carol Bronzyk.

He voted “present” on the appointments, saying the accelerated schedule has caused the fair board to “lose some good people.”
