Volunteer labor offered for IM sidewalk work

IRON MOUNTAIN — A sidewalk replacement program will be offered in Iron Mountain with the aid of volunteer labor from a local union.

The city council Monday approved guidelines for homeowner applicants, who will be responsible for the cost of the concrete. “It’s a good value for the homeowner — a chance to get some nice sidewalks in,” Mayor Dale Alessandrini said.

City Manager Jordan Stanchina said the concrete cost is estimated at $2.50 per square foot, which would amount to $625 for a standard 50-foot section.

Under city ordinance, sidewalk replacement is the responsibility of the adjacent homeowner, Stanchina explained. The city already has a program to lessen the cost by removing existing sidewalk at no charge, but the homeowner is responsible for hiring a contractor for installation.

For two weeks in the spring, Laborers’ International Union of North America Local 1329 apprentices and trainees will provide free labor for the project. A minimum of 50 feet will be eligible for replacement, with priority given to neighbors replacing a contiguous sidewalk. The second priority will be the volume of traffic, or such factors as vicinity to a school.

Any homeowner can sign up and a final list will be established based on the priorities. A deposit will be required before the work is scheduled. Some smaller sections might be OK’d for replacement if they’re near larger sections, Alessandrini said.

The city will provide more information when it begins to accept applications.

In other action, the council:

— Learned that Matt Opolka is the new liaison officer at Iron Mountain schools. He replaces the police department’s Adam Ray, who has been promoted to lieutenant with the retirement of Lt. Jeff Bortolini.

— Approved a special use permit for John Budge to provide daycare services at 519 Houghteling St. The planning commission had recommended approval with the requirement that it be limited to six children. The permit can be reviewed if there are complaints.

— Reported 40 deer had been harvested as of Monday through a managed archery hunt within city limits.

— Noted that City Hall will be closed Thursday and Friday for the Thanksgiving holiday. On Friday, employees will use a vacation, personal leave or “no pay” day.
