Crash sends SUV into Lake Superior

MARQUETTE — A three-car crash on U.S. 41 Wednesday morning landed one vehicle in Lake Superior and resulted in injuries but no fatalities, authorities said.

Marquette Police officers were sent about 7:30 a.m. Wednesday to the crash near the Marquette Branch Prison entrance.

A black Chrysler sedan reportedly struck a northbound gray Subaru SUV from behind, causing the Subaru to veer off the roadway, down the embankment and into Lake Superior. The driver of the Chrysler got out of his vehicle only to have a third vehicle, a blue Saturn sedan, hit the Chrysler, which in turn struck the Chrysler’s driver standing nearby, according to police.

Officers assisted the driver of the Subaru to shore. The drivers of the Subaru and Saturn received minor injuries and declined medical treatment at the site.

EMS transported the driver of the Chrysler to UP Health System-Marquette for treatment of injuries.

The Subaru was successfully removed from the lake. Authorities said the crash is still under investigation.

The Marquette Police Department was assisted by UPHS-Marquette EMS, Marquette County Sheriff’s Office, Chocolay Township Police Department, Michigan DNR Law Enforcement and the Marquette Fire Department.
