Three-county joint board meeting today on Northpointe ‘concerns’

A special joint meeting of Dickinson, Iron and Menominee county boards is set for this afternoon in Norway to address recent concerns about Northpointe Behavioral Healthcare System.

No further details were provided on what was to be discussed about Northpointe, which provides mental health services for the three counties from offices in Kingsford, Iron River and Menominee.

The meeting comes after the Northpointe board of directors voted 9-1 on Thursday to censure member Patricia Mueller for what was described as a violation of patient confidentiality rights, according to a Northpointe official who asked that no name be used.

Mueller had a complaint filed with the Michigan Office of Recipient Rights that, as a Menominee County Board commissioner, she shared in an open meeting the name of a person who received services from Northpointe, the official stated.

An investigation confirmed the violation, according to the Michigan Office of Recipient Rights.

The board Thursday reviewed what actions might be taken with Mueller, who declined to go into closed session for the discussion. It was pointed out at the meeting that as a board member the options were limited but had Mueller been an employee it might be grounds for termination.

The Northpointe official, however, said today’s joint meeting is not expected to be related to the Mueller matter.

The joint meeting of county boards is set for 2:30 p.m. today in the John Degenaer Jr. Building at the Dickinson County Fairgrounds, N1476 U.S. 8 in Norway. The meeting is open to the public.
