All weight restrictions to be lifted on state highways

Dickinson to relax limits Monday as well, but only south of US 2

Seasonal weight restrictions will be lifted Monday morning on all state trunkline highways, the Michigan Department of Transportation announced Thursday.

Local road officials also plan Monday to end weight restrictions on Dickinson County roads south of U.S. 2, beginning at 7 a.m. Central time.

The state’s move affects routes that carry M, I or a U.S. designation and will take effect at 6 a.m. Eastern time, MDOT stated in a news release.

Such weight restrictions are put in place during the spring thaw period, which is now complete.

While MDOT had lifted the restrictions April 1 on most state trunkline highways, they remain in effect for much of the Upper Peninsula until Monday.

The Upper Peninsula normally doesn’t see restrictions end as early as downstate, Jim Harris, managing director of the Dickinson County Road Commission, said at the time. The seasonal restrictions are aimed at reducing potential pavement damage during the spring thaw.

Weight limits on local roads usually remain in place longer as well, he said, because county roads are not built to the same standard as the more well-traveled state highways.

The lifting of such restrictions also tends to come in stages in Dickinson County, he said, relaxing in the lower half first before being shifted north to the Marquette County line as conditions allow.
