Back to the Present

The Daily News is bringing back photos of “yesteryears.” Each week, an historical photograph will be posted on The Daily News’ Facebook page. Readers will be asked to identify the location, as well as share a memorable experience of the location. “Back to the present” will then be published in the Wednesday edition, including a current photo. Readers can comment on The Daily News’ Facebook page, or email tcastelaz@ironmountaindailynews.com with subject “Back to the present.”

This week’s Back to the Present photograph is a 1940-1950 view of Riverside Supper Club in Spread Eagle in Florence County, Wis.

The Riverside Club became well-known for its high standard of entertainment, along with its Italian food, roast chicken and steaks. They featured many popular dance orchestras and entertainment nightly.

Riverside also had a private dining room that was used for banquets, weddings and private parties. The supper club burned down during the spring of 1987.

The second photo is today’s look of the area at

Bigfoot Riverside Liquor and Bears Den.

“Riverside Supper Club — had dinner there on prom night. All night graduation party 1959. Dancing and listening to Art Perry and The Scandelli,” — Bitsi Hamm

“Had my wedding reception there when they reopened after the fire. They weren’t even open to the public yet. August 1979,” — Carol Ivacko Larson

“My dad has his retirement party there and they had a beautiful stage. He retired after 1983, maybe 1984.” — Grace Michaud

“My mom always talked about dancing partying at The Riverside when she was young, not sure of the years, she was born in 1923, so maybe late 40’s.” — Patty Hord
