Breitung Township to lose clerk effective on May 31

QUINNESEC — Wendy Larson plans to step down as Breitung Township clerk effective May 31.

The township board accepted her resignation Monday with regret.

In her resignation letter, Larson stated, “I am thankful for the opportunity to have a seat on the township board and learn many aspects of local government, however I have decided that it is time to pursue an opportunity out of state. I believe that my experiences in the last two years will be valuable in the years to come and for that I am deeply grateful.”

Larson’s term was set to expire in November and nobody has registered to run for the position, meaning the board will likely have to appoint someone to fill the position through November 2026.

The board approved having the personnel committee begin interviewing for a full-time employee, with the tentative title of accounts payable clerk/election manager to fill many of the clerk duties. The board also authorized the committee to start soliciting letters of interest to fill the township clerk vacancy.

In other business, the board:

— Allowed the public works department to spend $7,296 for 240 cubic yards of wood chips for the playgrounds in the East Kingsford and Quinnesec parks. This expense occurs every year or two, Public Works Superintendent Jay Davis said, adding there are less costly material options but switching over to them would involve digging out the existing material, which would make them more expensive.

— Authorized Davis to put out for bids to replace a dump truck with an F550 or equivalent and a mower to replace one of the township’s 20-year-old Jacobsen machines.

— Granted Trustee Paul Taff’s request for a spring cleanup, which involves placing three large dumpsters at the public works department and having the crew monitor who and what is being dumped. The cleanup will run from a Saturday to a Saturday, with specific dates and times to be announced.

— Approved the fire department’s recommendation to hire Cassandra Bobart. Bobart recently joined the Billerud search/rescue and fire brigade. Bobart will be at fire station No. 1.

— Allowed Deputy Treasurer Cameron Mulka to be added to the township bank accounts.
