Spring paving scheduled in Iron Mountain

IRON MOUNTAIN — Paving will start soon on a number of streets and alleys in Iron Mountain under a $731,041 contract awarded in September to Bacco Construction Co.

Only a portion of the 2.4 miles of work was completed last fall as the bid allowed a pause into spring, City Manager Jordan Stanchina said. The Iron Mountain contractor has the following on its schedule:

— 2,600 feet of East E Street from Park Avenue east to its end;

— 485 feet of East G Street from Park Avenue east to its end;

— 970 feet of Park Avenue from East A Street to Millie Hill Estates Road;

— 490 feet of Park Avenue from Phil Rahoi Drive to Millie Street;

— 2,080 feet of Grand Boulevard Circle from Devereaux Street to Lake Antoine Road;

— 860 feet of Spring Street from U.S. 2 to Grand Boulevard Circle.

The alley work includes sections between Woodward and Detroit avenues in the area of Union and Ripley streets; between East B and East C streets in the area of Park Avenue and Adams Street; between East G and East F streets in the area of Jackson Street to U.S. 2.; and between East F and East G streets behind Krist Oil.

The fall paving included 835 feet of H Street from East G Street to Jackson Street; an alley that extends to East G Street; and Cook Street. Also, work was done on Grant Street near Kwik Trip. Bacco was paid $138,784 in December for those projects, with Kwik Trip contributing $10,460.

The city council was updated on the schedule Monday.

In other action, the council:

— Received word that police recruit Zach Smith started training this week at Northern Michigan University’s Regional Police Academy. Two other recruits, Hunter Larson and Austin Snell, are expected to graduate from the Oakland County Community College Policy Academy on May 23 and will join the department May 26. Lt. Michael Weslin is retiring in July, as is Ed Mattson, director of police and fire services.

— Was updated on a tree removal project at Cemetery Park, where St. Vincent Tree Service of Aurora, Wis., has so far taken down 15 trees, with five to 10 more expected. The project is funded by a $41,000 grant from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Urban and Community Forestry Program. About $35,000 is dedicated to tree removal, while the rest is for small- to medium-size replacements. The trees being replaced are large and mostly dead.

— Learned that a proposed budget for the Iron Mountain-Kingsford Wastewater Treatment plant calls for a fee increase of 5 cents per 1,000 gallons of usage. Typical usage per person is 3,000 gallons monthly, according to water industry estimates.

— Approved two easement requests from We Energies — one for underground power east of Mountain View Ice Arena and another to upgrade power delivery in the 401 S. Stephenson Ave. parking lot area. At Mountain View, the line already exists, but the lack of an easement was discovered as the company made plans to repair the power pole that supplies it. At the parking lot, a new transformer will be installed in a grassy areas south of the downtown stage. Lines to the site will be bored from Iron Mountain Street.

— Scheduled a public hearing for 6 p.m. Monday, June 3, on the proposed acceptance of three parcels in the west Mud Lake area being donated by the estate of the late Charles Houser. The land is swamp and Mud Lake is part of the city’s stormwater collection system, so it make sense to acquire the parcels, Stanchina said.

— Approved parking lot and street closures for this year’s Downtown Development Authority events — Out to Lunch, Brew Fest, Italian Fest and Oktoberfest. Out to Lunch will require a parking lot closure in front of the downtown stage — as well as closing Iron Mountain Street — from about 11:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. every Thursday from June 6 through Aug. 8. Brew Fest is scheduled for Saturday, June 8, while Italian Fest is Saturday, Aug. 10, and Oktoberfest in Saturday, Sept. 28. For those events, all but the Farmer’s Market area of the parking lot will be needed from 7 a.m. Friday through 11 a.m. Sunday. Partial closure of Iron Mountain Street will also be needed.
