Man who recorded woman in bathroom faces deportation

IRON MOUNTAIN — A Vulcan man will spend six months in jail for recording a woman in a bathroom.
Emilio Gomez-Perez, 38, was sentenced Tuesday in Dickinson County Circuit Court after earlier pleading no contest to felony charges of computers-using to commit a crime and surveilling an unclothed person.
The criminal complaint states Gomez-Perez used his cellular phone to record the woman Feb. 18.
The woman told the court she felt violated and required ongoing therapy due to Gomez-Perez’s actions.
Prosecuting Attorney Lisa Richards said that it unfortunate that Gomez-Perez chose to come to this country illegally and then draw attention to himself by engaging in criminal behavior.
Through an interpreter, Gomez-Perez apologized to the victim.
In handing down her sentence, Circuit Court Judge Mary Barglind stated that Gomez-Perez was very fortunate that he was only going to county jail and being deported and not going to prison.
Barglind sentenced Gomez-Perez to six months on each of the charges he was convicted.
Gomez-Perez received credit for 107 days already served and the sentences will run concurrently. In addition Gomez-Perez will have to register as a sex offender and will face deportation when his sentence is completed.
