IRON MOUNTAIN — A numbers of building updates are underway or being planed at the Iron Mountain Schools, Superintendent Jerry Sardina said.
The weight room is getting about $100,000 in upgrades and renovations, including some new equipment.
North Elementary School will receive new carpeting throughout the building, new paint, more efficient lighting and new classroom furniture for the students.
Several buildings will be get new doors and a more secure entrance system.
A resurfacing project was approved for the basketball courts on Carpenter Avenue, the alley by Central Middle School and the student parking lot east of the Izzo-Mariucci Building. The work will be completed by Midwest Asphalt for $11,000.
About $265,000 in roof repairs will be done at the Izzo-Mariucci administration building, with priority given to the gymnasium, and at the East Elementary School Building on the southwest end of the building.
The East Elementary building houses the Iron Mountain Kingsford Community Schools, which is the adult and alternative education school, and the district’s Homeschool Partnership.
Work on HVAC system will be completed next year at the Izzo- Mariucci building.
At a recent school board meeting, Gundlach Champion estimator Brad Kleikamp and project manager Scott Helminen explained a proposal for updating the steam boiler system.
Two rooftop units would replace the four units hanging from the ceiling. They would be gas-fired with natural gas. They would design a support system for the units.
All conversion units would need to be replaced with new piping below, fed up from the basement. There would also be a new control package.
Design work would be completed in the next few months, with bidding planned next spring.
