Boy killed in boating accident
SAULT STE. MARIE — A 14-year-old boy died Tuesday after falling into the water and being struck by a boat near Drummond Island, according to the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office.
The incident was reported at 8:30 a.m. and occurred between Drummond Island and Howard Island, the department said in a news release.
The boy, who was entangled by the propeller of the boat, was pronounced dead shortly after first responders arrived.
“The female operator of the boat quickly disengaged the motor and jumped into the water to assist,” the sheriff’s office said. “The boat operator was able to flag down a fisherman passing by for assistance. The two of them were able to get the male out of the water and transport him to Drummond Island where he was turned over to Drummond Island EMS.”
The accident remains under investigation, authorities said.
