ND tabs interim superintendent through Sept. 3

FELCH TOWNSHIP — North Dickinson County School District will have an interim superintendent for the start of its 2024-25 school year.

The school board Tuesday secured Mary Brayak to lead the district through at least Sept. 3, when they hope to have a new superintendent/principal in place.

Brayak has been guiding the district in its search through the Michigan Association of School Boards after Angel Inglese resigned effective June 30 to become director of general education for the Dickinson-Iron Intermediate School District. Inglese, who had the position for more than 12 years, did agree to stay on through July to help while the district works on her successor.

Brayak, of Bark River, has conducted searches with MASB for the past seven years, helping to fill 14 superintendent vacancies in the region.

Before that, she’s had administrative roles in school districts such as Mid Peninsula, Big Bay de Noc, Bark River-Harris and Gladstone. She also is a consultant for Watersmeet.

With the MASB taking applications through 4 p.m. Eastern time Tuesday, the district needed someone to do the job through the interview and hiring process.

The current timeline for replacing Inglese is to decide Aug. 12 who to bring in for interviews Aug. 15.While no questions will be taken from the public, district residents are encouraged to attend and submit written comments or questions the school board will review, Brayak said.

“I can’t stress enough the importance of these feedback forms for the board,” she said.

The goal is to have someone hired to start Sept. 3, when students come back from the Labor Day weekend.

But if that date proves not feasible, Brayak will remain as long as needed, she said.

She now will be at the school in Felch Township two days a week, Brayak said.

The board Tuesday also confirmed Angela Jungwirth, assistant principal/guidance counselor, to handle principal duties through August and September.

Starting at $3.50/week.
