IM woman faces felony charges after standoff on Sept. 20

IRON MOUNTAIN — Felony charges have been issued against a woman who was subdued with less-than-lethal bean bag rounds after emerging from a basement with a handgun during a Sept. 20 standoff in Iron Mountain, Director of Police and Fire Services Jeff Solka said Wednesday.

In a news release, Solka said Brenda St. Germain was arraigned Monday in 95B District Court in Dickinson County on charges of discharging a weapon in or at a building, a 10-year felony; felony firearms, a two-year felony; three counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, a four-year felony; and three counts of assaulting/resisting/obstructing police officers, a two-year felony.

St. Germain’s bond has been set at $100,000.

According to the complaint, officers responded at 9:33 p.m. Sept. 20 to a critical incident on North Milwaukee Street where St. Germain, armed with a handgun, was barricaded in the basement of her residence. During the standoff, she reportedly discharged two rounds from the basement toward responding officers.

“We take incidents like this very seriously and are committed to ensuring the safety of our community and law enforcement personnel,” Solka said. “Our officers acted swiftly and professionally to manage a dangerous situation, and we appreciate the public’s support and understanding.”

According to an earlier news release, after the shots were fired a Critical Incident Response Team was able to establish communication with St. Germain several times. However, she later ceased all contact and eventually exited the basement while armed with the handgun.

A CIRT officer, in response, deployed a 12-gauge, less-than-lethal bean bag round to disarm her and prevent escalation to lethal force, Solka said.

Emergency care was provided on site to the 50-year-old St. Germain by Integrity Care EMS and Iron Mountain Fire Department, according to the Oct. 2 news release.

She was transported to Marshfield Medical Center-Dickinson for treatment and later transferred to Green Bay, Wis., for further care.

After her release from the Green Bay hospital, St. Germain was arrested on charges related to the incident and extradited to Dickinson County for arraignment.

Starting at $3.50/week.
