Norway exploring recycling deal with Kingsford

NORWAY — The City of Norway may partner with the City of Kingsford to get recyclables collected.

Both councils this week approved sending out a request for proposals to find a contractor to meet a new state law that requires municipalities offer curbside recycling by Jan. 1. Each city now has its own equipment and personnel for garbage collection.

Norway City Manager Dan Stoltman said that if the City of Norway were to perform the collections itself, the city would have to purchase a new garbage truck and add two full-time people.

With both cities in a similar situation, Stoltman reported he and Kingsford City Manager Mike Stelmaszek had discussed entering a deal together to get the best possible pricing.

Each city’s attorney approved the RFP with minor changes. Kingsford City Council approved their participation Monday.

The proposal, if successful, would result in a twice-monthly pickup of recyclables in both cities for those who choose to have the service, with a charge added to their monthly utility bill.

In other business, the council Wednesday approved:

— A special event application for the Norway Spring Classic Run set for April 26. Organizers also requested city barricades be used to close Section Street near U.S. 2 and a police officer be available for the start of the race.

— A special event application for the yearly city-wide garage sale May 17. Restrictions on where and when temporary signs could be placed were listed as a condition. Stoltman also noted that on the sale day police have to deal with a high volume of traffic in residential neighborhoods.

— A special event application from the Dickinson-Iron District Health Department to have a Breastfeeding Awareness Walk on Aug. 2 at Strawberry Lake Park. This is the ninth year of the event.

Starting at $2.99/week.
