SAULT STE. MARIE — One man died and another was seriously injured Monday after a one-vehicle crash on Drummond Island in Chippewa County.

According the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office, the call came in about 8:48 p.m. that a Chevrolet Impala had gone off Warners Cove Road, struck a culvert and crashed into the trees.

Both young men were transported to an area hospital but the driver did not survive, according to the sheriff’s department. The passenger had major injuries, but no information was provided on his condition. No names were released.

A Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office accident investigator was called to the site. Preliminary results indicate alcohol and excessive speed contributed to the crash but it remains under investigation. Neither man appears to have been wearing a seat belt.
