Iron County approves Chicaugon Lake milfoil treatment

CRYSTAL FALLS — The Iron County Board on Tuesday authorized hiring an Iron River company for $8,000 to $10,000 to remove Eurasian watermilfoil in Chicaugon Lake around the areas of the boat landing and Pentoga Park.

Many Waters LLC will use suction harvesting, in which divers pull the invasive plants by hand and feed them into a nozzle that sucks them into the boat, where they can be placed into containers and disposed of away from water.

The board annually budgets money to fight this invasive aquatic plant, which unchecked can form dense mats that crowd out native species. Many Waters has done the same work for the county in the past.

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy requires a permit for the removal operations. Iron County has two permits for Chicaugon Lake, one for the swimming area and one for the boat landing.

In other business, the board Tuesday:

— Approved shifting $74,006 in the budget from the adult use marijuana payment to the sheriff’s department vehicle expense.

— Passed a second budget amendment to increase the car visor camera expense by $72,900 from the end-of-year balance.

— Authorized posting for a part-time corrections officer, created when a full-time officer resigned and a part-time officer filled the position.

— Accepted John Lortie’s resignation as Facilities and Parks supervisor. The board also approved an updated job description for the position and posting the job opening.

— Approved the 2025 salaries for the Iron County Youth Camp. Counselors and heads of departments will start at $650 per week; kitchen, waterfront and maintenance staff salaries at $500 per week.

— Adopted a resolution stating the county was opposed to cuts to the federal Medicaid program.

— Appointed Alison Ayers to the Iron County Housing Commission Board.

— Named Adrienne Doerr the remonumentation grant administrator.

— Adopted a letter of support for the Bates Township Preservation Society as they pursue grants through Community Project Funding to preserve Bates Township Hall.
