Norway council approves buying backup generators

NORWAY — The Norway City Council on Monday authorized purchasing two backup generators despite the cost coming in higher than anticipated.

The generators will be installed at City Hall and the electric department building. The council was told April 2 having generators at both locations would keep the city’s computer network running during power outages, allowing for utility monitoring.

Additional benefits are overhead doors at the electrical department building will continue to work and City Hall could be used as a warming shelter when needed.

The city originally thought the generators would cost about $14,000 and budgeted up to $20,000. However, the low bid from B&B Electric of Iron Mountain was $28,876, plus another $2,000 for DTE Energy to upgrade the gas service at City Hall.

The additional $10,876 needed for the purchase will come from the electric department’s capital projects line item.

In other business, the council:

— Authorized $3,800 to have Gerald Dugree Jr. Logging move the city’s brush piles and yard waste to the back of the composting site.

— Extended the service agreement with RDA Services to assist in negotiating the city’s contract with union employees.

— Passed a resolution to update the Owners Dam Safety Program, which originally was adopted in 2012.

— Approved removing about 30 trees from Marion Park. Many of the trees are dead or dying and others are too close to playing fields.

— Granted event permits for this year’s Music in the Park and open-air markets that will take place from June through August. This year’s open-air market is moving to the city-owned parking lot by Mike’s on Main.

— Voted to suspend the city noise ordinance June 26 so the Knight Owl Sports Bar can host an outdoor dance.

— Chose to return city council meetings to 6 p.m. on the first and third Wednesdays of the month.

Starting at $3.50/week.
