Norway council gets report on Diamond Boosters work

NORWAY — A nonprofit group that oversees baseball operations at Marion Park continues to make improvements at the complex, including a new press box for Mike Maule Field.

Tony Adams of the Diamond Boosters gave an annual report on the group’s activities and finances to the Norway City Council on Wednesday. The report is part of an effort by the council and the Parks and Recreation Committee to have more participation with the Diamond Boosters.

Other recent projects at Mike Maule Field include new dugouts, installation of an infield warning track, fortification of the batter’s boxes and the application of field conditioner.

The group now is working on updating signage on the scoreboards at Brackett Field and Mike Maule Field.

In the future, the group hopes to build a second concession stand and install lighting for the top field.

Adams reported $51,678 in revenues last year and $55,572 in expenses. He stated that 55% of revenue comes from advertising and 45% from concessions.

In other business, the council:

— Approved buying a new City Hall copier from Cooper Office Equipment Inc. for $7,556. The Norway Downtown Development Authority is contributing $3,000 towards the purchase. Other price quotes were received from Office Planning Group, Inc. for $10,500 and Orbit Technology for $14,982.

— Voted to reissue a request for proposals with the City of Kingsford for the curbside pickup of recyclables.

Both cities are faced with a Jan. 1 deadline when a new state law will require municipalities to offer curbside recycling. In March the cities approved sending out the RFP as a joint effort to get the best possible price, but Norway City Manager Dan Stoltman reported they received no response. He thinks the reason is by making the service optional for residents the numbers given in the request were too vague. This time both cities are looking for an RFP that would make the recycling service mandatory for all residents.

Starting at $3.50/week.
