Wisconsin governor seeks applicants for Florence County district attorney

MICHAEL SCHOLKE

MADISON — Applicants are being sought for the Florence County district attorney position left vacant after the death of Michael Scholke on April 24.

Gov. Tony Evers will appoint a new district attorney to serve the remainder of the unexpired term that ends January 2029.

“Michael Scholke was a respected attorney who was actively involved in his community and was excited to have recently been elected the Florence County district attorney,” Evers said in a news release. “We offer our sincerest condolences to his family, friends and everyone in Florence County and the greater Iron Mountain community as they mourn his passing.”

Scholke, 43, was elected Nov. 5 to the four-year position, succeeding Douglas Drexler, who retired after 32 years as Florence County prosecutor. Scholke was an Iron Mountain native and Iron Mountain High School graduate who since 2012 had been employed at Mouw & Celello, P.C. in Iron Mountain.

He moved to Florence in May 2023 and had practiced in Florence County for well over a decade.

Those interested in the Florence County district attorney position should email a completed application form and supporting materials to GovDAapp@wisconsin.gov. Applications must be received by 5 p.m. Friday, May 30.

The Florence County district attorney serves on a part-time basis, so can engage in a private practice of law as well, the news release notes.

The application also is available on the “Apply to Serve” page of Evers’ website at www.evers.wi.gov.
