Borderhounds expand annual fundraising event to two days

THE POSTER FOR the Borderhounds LE/MC’s third-annual fundraiser at Lake Antoine Park. For the first time, this year’s event will be Friday and Saturday and benefit two agencies, the Dickinson County Dive Team as in the past and Breitung Township Fire Department.

IRON MOUNTAIN — The Borderhounds LE/MC will host its third-annual fundraiser Friday and Saturday at Lake Antoine Park.

This year’s fundraiser has expanded to two days and will benefit both the Dickinson County Dive Team and the Breitung Township Volunteer Fire Department.

“This is the first year we’re going to a two-day event, due to the fact that our event has always been rock and roll and people were asking for country, so we added Friday night to bring in country music and give people what they want,” event organizer Chuck Lantz said.

On Friday, local country/variety band 141 North performs from 7 to 10 p.m. The Seth Brown Duo, formerly of Oregon, will play folk/Americana music from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday and returns from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday. Also performing on Saturday will be the Marquette rock band Spun from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. and local classic rock band OZ, from 7 to 10 p.m.

It is also the first year money is not solely going to the dive team.

“Breitung Township (Fire Department) came to us last year and asked if we could help them with some needed equipment that was not purchased or allocated. We weren’t able to do it last year because it was too late, so we brought them on board for this fundraiser, to give to another community group,” he said.

They have added a lot of sponsors this year as well. “I mean, the community has come out in droves to help us with this event. We raised a lot of funds through sponsorships,” Lantz said.

“We’re bringing in a bigger area for kids. Instead of having just one bounce house, we have two bounce houses and an obstacle course,” he said.

The bounce houses will be available from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday. The obstacle course will operate on Saturday only.

They will also have temporary tattoos for children and they plan to have students from local high schools doing face painting.

“So there’s a bunch of kids stuff that we’ve added, just to keep the kids busy. It’s pretty much a big family event,” Lantz said.

About 60 baskets have been donated to raffle off and there will also be 50-50 drawings.

Food and refreshments will be available on site. Food vendors include 7 Wonders, LaCatrina’s, Mama Mangia, Crunchy Munchy, Ice Cream Barn, Sugar Jets, North Haven Homestead and S & J Foods.

Several commercial vendors are coming in to sell a variety of items. Galick Tattoos will do tattoos on a first-come, first-served basis both days and donate 50% of the sales. Lantz said they plan to grab five time slots on Friday and raffle them off for Saturday.

The dive team will demonstrate their equipment and Lantz said the fire department hopes to have the smoke house on site as well.

Lantz explained that each member of the dive team needs about $8,000 to $10,000 worth of equipment. They hope to raise at least enough to supply one diver, as well as equipment for the fire department.

“We’re just asking for the community to come out and support these two needed community agencies to help give them the equipment they need to perform their duties,” he said.

Cost is $10 for one day or $15 for both days. The event will be 4 to 10 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday.

Starting at $3.50/week.
