Breitung to offer summer meals for kids at four sites

KINGSFORD — In an effort to ensure kids have access to healthy meals during the summer months, Breitung Township School District will serve summer meals to children and teens at four area sites through Aug. 8.

All children and teens 18 and younger can receive meals free of charge, with no registration needed.

Summer can be the hungriest time of year for kids who rely on school meals, the district stated in a news release. Hunger has short-and long-term consequences for a child’s health, education and well-being.

The USDA-funded Summer Meals program is run by school districts and local organizations. It provides nutritious meals that include fruit and/or vegetables, grains, proteins and milk. No application, registration or proof of residency or citizenship is required at sites.

Lunch will be served at these sites and times —

— Iron Mountain City Park, 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday;

— East Kingsford Park, 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday;

— Quinnesec Park, 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday;

— Lake Antoine Park, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday.

No meals will be served the week of June 30 through July 4 in observance of the Independence Day holiday, the district states on its website.

No Summer Food Service will be available this year at Woodland Elementary, Kingsford middle or high school or the Northern Lights YMCA Dickinson Center in Iron Mountain.

No adult meals will be offered.

Starting at $3.50/week.
