Handicap parking violation fines in IM to increase July 1

IRON MOUNTAIN — Annual adjustments in Iron Mountain’s fee schedule will take effect July 1, including an increase in fines for illegally parking in a handicap space.

The new fine is $100 if paid within three days, $110 if paid between four and 10 days, and $125 after 10 days. That’s up from $60, $70 and $80, respectively.

The change, which the city council approved Monday, was recommended by Director of Police and Fire Services Jeff Solka to provide more deterrence.

Meanwhile, fines for violating the overnight winter parking ban will remain the same — $40 if paid within three days, $50 if paid between four and 10 days, and $60 after 10 days

The charge for an additional garbage cart will rise as well, to $4 monthly, up from $1.50. A contract with GFL Environmental for citywide collection services includes this new rate, City Manager Jordan Stanchina said.

Fees for cemetery services will generally rise 3.1% to reflect an inflation adjustment. As it stands, the city’s charges are below actual costs, Stanchina said.

Rental housing inspection fees will see their first increase in 15 years. The new rates are $50 for the initial inspection, and $40 for a third-year inspection and subsequent inspections.

That’s up from $30 initial and $25 subsequent.

In other action, the city council:

— Approved a request from Lake Antoine Park Partners to set the Independence Day parade route the same as in recent years. The Iron Mountain portion to be closed beginning at 9 a.m. Friday, July 4, is Woodward to Carpenter avenues, Carpenter from Woodward to H Street, and H from Carpenter to the Midtown Mall entrance. LAPP, which is in its first year organizing the parade, is securing the required insurance.

— Authorized a fireworks display permit for Spielbauer Fireworks Co. of Green Bay, Wis., for a planned 25-minute show at dusk July 4 from Millie Hill, sponsored by Sons of American Legion Post 50.

— Will accept bids until 4 p.m. Monday, July 7, on the purchase of several pieces of equipment, including a zero turn lawn mower, a front 48-inch mower with collection system, a tractor-style mower and a modular aluminum trench box. Bids will also be sought for 2,000 tons of winter sand and 1,500 tons of gravel.

— Approved the purchase of four Motorola APX 6500 mobile police radios at $6,421.60 each and one Motorola APX 6000 portable radio at $5,609.90, all from Motorola Solutions at a total cost of $31,296.30. Also approved was a service agreement with Elcom Systems of Marquette to cover repairs for nine radios that are out of warranty at a total annual cost is $1,134. Under state requirements, all radios will have to operate under encryption by September 2026, Solka noted.

Starting at $3.50/week.
