IM to drop two varsity sports next school year

Low numbers cited for decision on tennis, golf

IRON MOUNTAIN — Two varsity sports have been canceled for the next school year at Iron Mountain High School.

On the recommendation of the Iron Mountain School Board’s athletic committee, no tennis or golf teams will compete in 2025-26 due to low numbers and scheduling conflicts.

The district will reevaluate after the next school year and consider re-offering those sports, the board decided this week.

Superintendent Jerry Sardina said he believes they have some larger classes coming up in the middle school grades.

Girls tennis had been offered in the fall and boys tennis in the spring. Golf is a spring sport.

In other business Tuesday, the board:

— Approved transitioning into a school-wide Title 1 program for early kindergarten through sixth grade, instead of a targeted one. Sardina said with a school-wide program they will be able to offer Title 1 services to all students, not only those who have been identified as needing the services. “Everyone can benefit from it,” he said. Title 1 is a federal education program that aims to ensure that all children have a fair and equitable educational opportunity, particularly those who may be at risk of falling behind.

— Learned the HVAC design for the Izzo-Mariucci Building is 90% complete, with expected costs to be slightly more than $2.8 million. The project engineering is being completed by OHM of Hancock, with Gundlach-Champion to oversee installation. The district received an $800,000 grant to help pay some of the costs and the rest of the money will come from the Zanardi Family Trust. If it stays around these numbers, the district will be able to complete renovations to reopen the industrial arts building to provide additional space for classrooms and other district needs.

— Approved hiring Kyle Johnson as varsity boys basketball coach. He was also approved as interim varsity football coach, but the district will seek another candidate because they believe it will be too much to do both. Zach Erickson will serve as football head JV coach and Will Strand was hired as assistant football JV coach.

— Hired MacKenzie Schwamin as elementary fourth grade teacher, Alaine Lorenzoni as EK teacher, Samantha Weber as elementary education assistant, Katie Bryant as at-risk education assistant and Tom Thomann as grades 5-12 building assistant principal. Melanie Sardina was hired as food service director.

— Accepted resignations from Karla LaDuron, MaryBeth Casanova, Magen Pfiester and Maureen Anderson as food service workers; Dawn Hazelwood as North Elementary educational assistant; Katie Bryant as 5-12 building educational assistant; Nikki Peddycord as middle school student council co-advisor; Kyle Johnson as JV boys basketball coach; Tom Thomann as a secondary special education teacher; Amy Ryan as 5-12 building principal/special education coordinator; and Brad Perry as 5-12 building assistant principal and athletic director.

— Approved Eric Penn as advisor to the high school environmental club.

— Accepted a letter of retirement from Dawn Kranz, Iron Mountain Home School Partnership music teacher.

Starting at $3.50/week.
